New swingers in town

4 November 2005

The new Vivian Street bridge will start to take shape next Tuesday when 14m pre-cast concrete beams are swung into position to span across the trench structure of the Wellington Inner City Bypass.

Transit New Zealand project manager Jonnette Adams said the new bridge will allow traffic to be taken off the short-term diversion, created earlier on in the project, which currently runs between Willis Street and Buller Street.

"This means that we can continue with the excavation of the trench to complete the alignment of the new bypass route," she said.

The eight concrete beams have all been pre-cast and will be delivered to the trench site one at a time.

"As each beam arrives it is off-loaded, swung directly into position and fixed onto the concrete abutments," said Ms Adams.

The new bridge is due for completion by the end of the year. Once the bypass is opened, the Vivian Street bridge will be for pedestrian and cycle access only.

Please note:  Beams arrive on site at 7.30am, Tuesday 8 November 2005.
