True beauty revealed

14 September 2006

External renovations on the former Stagecraft Theatre, relocated as part of the Wellington Inner City Bypass project, have now been completed.

Restoration works included the reinstatement of the ground floor verandah, a new front door with coloured sidelights in keeping with the original style, and replacement of the windows to their original positions as well as a complete re-paint.

Transit New Zealand project manager Jonnette Adams said that many of the original features of the building were lost when the property was converted for theatre use.

"It's always been a spectacular building and the external renovations have allowed for the building to be restored to its former glory for Wellington and Te Aro to enjoy."

“We are extremely happy with the outcome of this restoration and look forward to bringing the rest of the historic buildings ‘back to life’,” she said.

This building will head the new Kensington historic precinct and once urban works are undertaken will be complete with a heritage garden incorporating the original circular concrete paths.
