SH1 Terrace Tunnel to be closed - northbound

18 September 2006

Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists that the SH1 Terrace Tunnel will be CLOSED to ALL NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC on Saturday 23 September 2006 from 6.30am and will reopen at 7:30am on Tuesday 26 September 2006.

The closure is to allow for the excavation and surfacing work to realign the motorway onramp with the new Wellington Inner City Bypass.

Transit New Zealand project manager Jonnette Adams said that the majority of the work would be undertaken during the weekend to help avoid disruption to peak traffic during the working week, however three consecutive full days are needed to complete the works therefore the tunnel will also be closed on Monday.

"Motorists who frequently use the Terrace Tunnel to travel north should allow extra time for their travel while these works are underway. While the closure is in place, traffic will be detoured onto The Terrace. Alternatively road users can use Jervious/Aotea Quay to gain access to the northern motorway," she said.

As the works involve sealing the road, the work is weather dependent. If postponed, the work will be carried out the following weekend starting on Saturday 30 September and finishing on 2 October.

Transit New Zealand thanks road users for their patience while these works are underway.
