Transit reminds motorists of Vivian Street route change

25 January 2007

Transit New Zealand is reminding motorists that the short section of Vivian Street between Willis and Victoria Streets will reverse in direction from tomorrow (Friday 26 January).

Transit’s Wellington Inner City Bypass project manager Jonnette Adams says the direction reversal is part of the southbound route of the Inner City Bypass and will assist motorists travelling in and out of Brooklyn and eastern / southern suburbs.  These motorists will now be able to turn right onto Vivian Street from Willis Street, shortening the existing route to Victoria Street.

Motorists travelling to Karori, Kelburn and The Terrace, who currently use Vivian Street to access Buller Street and onto the Terrace, will need to use Karo Drive (the northbound part of the Bypass), turning right at Willis Street and left onto Vivian Street.

Ms Adams advises motorists heading to Karori, Kelburn and The Terrace that this is a temporary diversion until Ghuznee Street is changed to a two-way, inner-city road by the end of March.  This will enable direct access from Ghuznee Street onto The Terrace.

Motorists are urged to take extra care and follow the signs put in place to guide them through the new layout.

Ms Adams continues to stress that only half of the Bypass project is open, and its full benefits will not be realised until the southbound route is opened by the middle of this year.

Transit will continue to keep the public informed as further changes are introduced and thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation.
