What is a Bailey bridge?
A Bailey bridge is best described as a kit-form bridge system that is versatile and is relatively quick to erect and dismantle. The basic component of a Bailey bridge is a three-metre long truss panel. This can be configured to provide much longer spans and cater for a range of loads. A standard bridge (30m long, single span) could be erected and in use within a week.
What can a Bailey bridge be used for?
Over the past 40 years, these bridges have been effectively used for the following:
- Fast solution for short and long term replacement of collapsed bridges, 3m to 200m long
- Fast solution to allow the re-opening of roads washed out in storms.
- Cost effective temporary structures for roading projects.
- Provision of minor stream crossings for filming locations and other non-emergency situations.
What does Transit's Bailey bridge service provide?
Since 1 July 2000, Transit's Bailey bridges have been available for commercial hire to all interested users, including private companies and individuals. Transit New Zealand owns more than 3000 tonnes of Bailey Bridge components.
This service includes rapid design, on-site erection and maintenance, dismantling and transportation. The main objective of the project is to be able to provide essential expertise to ensure efficient and timely response in emergencies.
How much will it cost?
All hirers, including Transit New Zealand are required to pay for transport, erection and dismantling, monthly hire and inspections etc.
The hire charge is based on the weight of components used, plus transport and erection services. A tonne is about the equivalent of a metre length of bridge. A hire charge of $85 per tonne / per month applies.
Hirers operate under a standard hire agreement with Transit New Zealand.
Transit operates this project as a non-profit making scheme. The hire charge is used to fund the storage and maintenance of the components.
Local authorities and Transit New Zealand may apply to Land Transport New Zealand for financial assistance when wanting to use Bailey bridges on public roads.
